The theater is a living, breathing thing. It is a thing that transcends borders and transcends language. It is a thing that makes its own rules and takes minorities under its wing. It brings people together in a transcendental experience of the senses, the mind, and everything else under the sun. The theater is where you can escape from your problems, even if only for an evening or two. Sometimes it’s also where you find yourself as well- as my father found himself when he saw Arrival for the first time with his girlfriend’s family. A few nights ago, I got a phone call from my father. It was the first time we’d spoken in over a month. “Hey kid,” he said in his thick Southern accent. “How ya been?” He hadn’t even said hello before launching into his story. He told me that he and my second cousin had taken her parents to see Arrival at the local theater when it finally released here in the South. His voice was shaky and somber- not something I could ever remember hearing from him. “It was a good night. I’ve been waiting to tell you about it.” “Well, now that you have.” “Yeah. It was a good night, man.” He started telling me a story about a woman who was talking to the aliens through an interpreter headset. They spoke in their own language, but she spoke English through the translator device at her ear to understand what they were saying. The movie was just winding down when she got this look on her face and then got up abruptly from her seat and walked away towards the back of the theater- leaving behind her young daughter with my cousin’s family. “What’s that about?” I said. He knew I meant the look, not the departure. “Well, if you’d seen the movie like I did-” he continued. “I meant the look, dad! What was she thinking? What did she see? Why didn’t she say anything? What happened to her kid!? Did you even see her kid? How do you just leave your kid like that?! It didn’t even look like there were any emergency exits back there. ” “It was the movie. It’s not that important. It was just a movie.” He paused to give me an opportunity to take his words in. I did, but I wasn’t very happy about it. “What did you see?” I demanded, sensing that he was about to tell me something that would make my world fall apart again. He told me exactly what he had seen- the same thing I saw in Arrival when I watched it for the first time with my girlfriend at the cinema months ago.
